Parging

  • Parging is the application of a thin mortar or cementitious coat—typically cement, sand, and additives—onto foundation walls (concrete block or poured concrete) to protect against moisture, seal cracks, and provide a smooth, uniform appearance
  • Purpose: Protects foundations from moisture/weathering, conceals imperfections, and improves aesthetics.
  • Materials: A specialized mix of Portland cement, lime, sand, and water is typically applied, often with bonding agents to ensure adhesion.
  • Application Process:
    1. Preparation: Old, loose, or deteriorated mortar is removed, and the wall is cleaned.
    2. Bonding: A bonding agent is applied for maximum adherence.
    3. Scratch Coat: A first layer is applied and scratched to create a rough surface for the next coat.
    4. Finish Coat: A second layer is applied and often finished with a sponge for a smooth texture.
  • When It’s Needed: Parging is recommended when you see cracked, crumbling, or damaged concrete block walls.
  • Limitations: It is not a substitute for proper structural waterproofing, but it provides a necessary protective barrier
